World Kindness Day

World Kindness Day
Assembly Charity

Earlier this term the Lower School celebrated World Kindness Day.  The children attended a workshop on ‘Acts of Kindness’ hosted by Nimesh ‘Nimo’ Patel.  The workshop focused on the benefits of being kind to others.  The children also learned some songs about kindness and they made a kindness display in the Lower School hall.  It was lovely to see so many children sharing stories of how they had spread kindness with a variety of people in their lives.

Here's how one of our parents described Nimo's visit:

Nimo's visit to London on his Empty Hands Music tour tour provided a beautiful context to share this message with the children and the teachers, and to offer them an opportunity to practice kindness.

Throughout the morning, the children seemed to enjoy Nimo's inspiring music and moving stories, and, above all, looked genuinely happy when they spoke from the heart about the ways that they had made an extra effort to be kind during the "7 Days of Kindness" in the lead up to his visit on World Kindness Day, Thursday, Nov 13th.  We heard so many beautiful stories from the children during the workshops about their acts of kindness and it was a joy to read each post-it-note they brought with an act of kindness and transform them into giant heart-shaped displays in the lower school hall.  From the littlest ones in the nursery classes right through to Year 2, the students genuinely understood in their hearts what it means to be kind and had wonderful ideas of ways that they can continue to be kind.

As a new parent in the Newton community this year (our eldest daughter Sareena is in Miss Faye's nursery class), I am genuinely grateful to all of you for embracing these values and sharing them with the students at Newton Prep in this way.  It would be amazing to see the school start a new tradition of celebrating World Kindness Day with "7 Days of Kindness" every year!  I've already noticed my own daughter Sareena taking time to think about and do acts of kindness and to acknowledge, with gratitude, the kindness that others have shared with her more naturally and regularly than before, what a gift!
