From Years 3 to 5, pupils at Newton Prep enjoy a rich and varied curriculum, taught increasingly by subject specialists in purpose-built spaces. The pitch and pace of our curriculum is high.

Years 3-5 English
In English, the focus is on developing confident readers, articulate speakers and expressive writers. Pupils explore a diverse range of texts, from classic literature to contemporary poetry, while honing grammar, spelling, comprehension and creative writing skills. By Year 5, pupils are ‘Word Detectives’ discovering the etymology of words and how words are built. The ever-popular Writers’ Society is a lunchtime club where pupils from Years 5 have the space and time to write, share and get inspired, publishing a Zine of their work every term.
All our pupils are encouraged to enter national writing competitions regularly and their pieces are often published in magazines and books

Years 3-5 Mathematics
Mathematics is taught with pace and precision, building fluency and reasoning through problem-solving and investigation. Pupils deepen their understanding of number, shape, data and measure, often applying skills across real-life contexts and collaborative tasks.
From Year 5, pupils are taught in sets to provide tailored challenge and support. We focus on strong number fluency and the application of skills, laying a solid foundation for 11+ and 13+ success.

Years 3-5 Science
Science lessons move into our fully equipped laboratories, where practical enquiry fuels curiosity and discovery. From Year 5, pupils have three weekly dedicated Science lessons.

Years 3-5 Arts
In Drama, every pupil has the chance to shine, whether it’s through whole-class productions such as Year 3’s ‘Revolting Rhymes’ or Year 4’s ‘Greek Plays’. In the classroom, pupils explore and develop essential Drama skills, including improvisation, mime and ensemble work. Our Year 5 ‘Film Night’ is a long-standing tradition in which pupils create silent films and receive awards at our very own ‘N’Oscars’.
