In a week of protests and politics, Mrs Fleming's whole school assembly today looked at the power of words and the differences between freedom of speech here and in countries like Hong Kong.

Here in Britain, the school agreed, there was enough freedom of speech to allow UKIP leader Nigel Farage and PM David Cameron to conduct a war of words across the media, and for MP Nick Reckless to swap sides publicly this week from the Conservatives to UKIP, with every word said about his betrayal/bravery being covered by the full glare of the media. By contrast, young people and students partaking in the Occupy movement in Hong Kong are fighting for the basic right to vote, to choose their leaders freely, and to be allowed the freedom of speech and right of protest that we take for granted in this country.

The children from Miss Edmonds' Friday afternoon activity then demonstrated, by way of contrast, the power of silence as they showed off their ability to communicate in sign language....
